5 Tips for Fun Summer Education

Ask an Educator. Find out if your child’s present teacher has any recommendations for activities for summer that can help maintain academic skills that will be beneficial for the following school year.

Break out the books. Ask your child to set a summer reading goal. Help your child achieve their goal with weekly trips to your local library to replenish books.

Explore the great outdoors. Go on a hike, take a trip to a nearby lake or to the ocean, or embark on a nature walk. The great outdoors provides endless opportunities for children to learn, explore, observe, and even experiment. There really is no classroom comparison. Studies find that walks in nature increase our ability to manage stress, solve problems, and even increase our happiness!

Get cooking in the kitchen. The act of cooking has a ton of educational benefits for kids of all ages; cooking helps children learn important math skills, improved comprehension and reading skills, and also helps build confidence and self-esteem!

Camp Fun! If you are planning to send your child to summer camp contact the camp program staff to find out more information about the daily schedule and activities.  This is so you are able to prepare your child each morning before camp (i.e. social stories, verbally, schedules).

Summer education doesn’t have to mean summer school. Activities like those above help kids to use their minds in new ways. When children have fun, they retain information more easily, making it more readily available as children grow. We hope you have a fabulous summer filled with learning and fun!
