End of 1st Semester TMSA 6th Grade Happenings

We are having a sensational time in the sixth grade!  Please scroll below for a glimpse into our daily virtual activities.  Sixth grade parents and guardians, please encourage your students to keep up the good work as we are drawing to the close of the first semester of the 2020 - 2021 academic school year.

Science 6th Grade: Ms. Bynoe

I am amazed daily by the level of concentration and perseverance demonstrated by our sixth grade students.  One of this year's enduring understandings is that models are used to help us visualize different concepts.  We are also learning that there are many different types of models such as digital, graphic, edible or human.  It was a pleasure watching siblings and parents participate in our human models as we learned about rotation and revolution.  Thank you!  I've included some pictures and videos of various models that your students have created.   Please stay tuned for more fun at home activities.

Current Concepts:  Water on the Earth (6E3AC)

Upcoming Concept: Water Processes (6E3B)

Math 6th Grade : Mr. Price

The Cady Project was a huge success! My 6th grade scholars completed a performance that was aligned to the lessons of unit 2 in which they had to find the ratios and percent of the colors of skittles or M&M's in their bag. They also had to convert the size of their bag (ounces) to cups and grams. They also had to find the unit rate of the candy to the price and weight of the bag and calculate the price of the bag if it was on sale for a certain percent off.

Even though I wasn't able to guide them through the task face to face, based on the pictures several of them enjoyed learning using something they enjoy eating.

Social Studies 6th Grade: Mr. Dolland

Mr. Dolland Canada

I am so ecstatic to be teaching a unit on the country of my birthplace - Canada!!! Did you know that Canada has more lakes than the rest of the world combined? We are learning about the physical features of our neighbor to the north that includes the St. Lawrence River, Hudson Bay, Canadian Shield, Rocky Mountains, Great Lakes, Arctic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean. Students are also learning about the impact Canada’s location, climate, and resources have on the rest of the world. Canada’s proximity to the United States makes us their number one trading partner in terms of imports and exports. After studying about many of Canada’s cool cities like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, many of our students plan to visit the country post the pandemic. Many students would like to visit during the summer due to Canada’s harsh winters; however, some students said they would not mind traveling in the winter to go skiing, sledding, and snowboarding. Parents get your child's passport ready as he/she would love to visit our neighbor to the north - Canada; the home of Alex Trebek (R.I.P.), Celine Dion, Justin Bieber, Jim Carrey, Drake, the Toronto Raptors, and of course our beloved polar bears.

ELA 6th Grade: Mr. Burnam

Harriet Tubman

We are finishing up Cycle 3 of our Instructional Focus Calendar which focuses largely on ELAGSERL4 (Determining the meaning of words and phrases as the are used in a text, including figurative language and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone). We have also been working hard to understand author’s purpose, point of view, and figures of speech. In writing, we have been studying and practicing Informative/Explanatory writing.  Students are currently completing an Informative/Explanatory writing workshop about the life and times of Harriet Tubman.

6th Grade Housekeeping:

  1. Students may submit a video to their homeroom teacher if they would like to try out for the morning announcements team.
  2. Students should be completing 2 lessons of iReady daily;  a lesson does not count unless the score is passing.
  3. Please have your student log into OTUS and iReady in front of you to show you their progress
  4. Students should be checking the homeroom class board on OTUS for enrichment opportunities, small group assignments and other important sixth grade announcements.

Thank you,

Ms. Bynoe
