10-Day Book Challenge for TMSA Students Evolves from Staff Professional Development

Every Friday over the course of the past four weeks, I've met and collaborated with TMSA ELA and Social Studies educators in grades 2 through 8 to help our students close some achievement gaps. During this timeframe, we conducted  weekly professional development (PD), which encourages us to reflect and group inquiries into best practices. As we focused on the different phases of our PD's, we read The Book Whisperer. Also, we built on new knowledge base, reflected on our current practices and shared our expertise so we may refine our instructional practices by learning with and from our colleagues.

As a reflection of the professional development, we will continue to awaken our students' inner reader by initiating a 10-book challenge.  Every child will be challenged to read 10 or more books by the end of the current school year. The objective is to dedicate classroom time to share the enjoyment of reading and build capacity with our reluctant readers.
