Students in Ms. Hawkins’ eighth-grade math class at The Main Street Academy (TMSA) put their critical thinking and collaboration skills to the test during an engaging puzzle challenge designed to reinforce key mathematical practices.
Throughout the activity, students worked together to analyze problems, discuss strategies, and piece together solutions while demonstrating perseverance and effective communication.
The purpose of the puzzle challenge was to engage students in Mathematical Practices 1, 3, and 6 by persevering through a problem, communicating their reasoning clearly, and using precise mathematical language to collaborate effectively and successfully complete the challenge.
Activities like these provide students with opportunities to strengthen their mathematical reasoning while building confidence as problem solvers. By working collaboratively and explaining their thinking, students develop essential communication, critical thinking, and perseverance skills that support success both in the classroom and beyond.
