5th Graders Bring History to Life in Birmingham

On February 25th, 5th grade students at The Main Street Academy (TMSA) traveled to Birmingham, Alabama for a powerful field trip that brought their Black History reflections to life. The trip served as the culminating experience for their study of the novel The Watsons Go to Birmingham—1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis. After reading the book in class and watching the film adaptation, students had the opportunity to connect their learning to real historical locations.

During the trip, students visited the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the historic 16th Street Baptist Church. These sites played a major role in the Civil Rights Movement and helped students better understand the historical events and challenges faced during that time period.

Throughout the day, students explored exhibits, asked questions, and reflected on the bravery of those who fought for equality and justice. Standing in the same places where history occurred allowed them to make deeper connections to the events described in the novel and in their classroom discussions.

The experience was both educational and meaningful. It provided students with a deeper understanding of the Civil Rights Movement while honoring the stories and sacrifices of those who helped shape American history.
TMSA hopes that this trip not only strengthened students’ learning but also created memories that will last a lifetime. By connecting literature, history, and real-world experiences, the field trip helped ensure that the lessons from this important unit will stay with students for years to come.
