In celebration of Georgia’s Official Burn Day, Ms. Baker’s agriculture class participated in a supervised controlled burn demonstration, made possible through a collaborative effort with the College Park Fire Department.
This hands-on experience gave students a unique opportunity to explore the vital role of fire in agriculture, forestry, and conservation—all while prioritizing safety. Chief Sterling Jones' team led an engaging educational session on prescribed fires and their importance in sustainable land management. Battalion Chief Sal Gangi, along with fellow firefighters, explained the key differences between controlled burns and wildfires, helping students understand the science and strategy behind fire use in natural resource management.
To wrap up the day, students enjoyed a sweet treat of s’mores, bringing a warm and memorable close to an enlightening lesson.
