Celebrating Math and Creativity in Ms. Conover’s Sixth Grade Class

Ms. Conover’s sixth grade math class is turning numbers into something meaningful just in time for Mother’s Day! Students have been combining their math skills with creativity in a hands-on project that highlights both their learning and their appreciation for family.

In class, students are crafting hand-made envelopes and writing heartfelt letters to their mothers. But there’s a mathematical twist — each letter includes “math talk” vocabulary where students demonstrate concepts they’ve learned this year, showing off their understanding and ability to communicate using mathematical language.

In addition to the letters, students are also creating beautiful pearl and stone bead bracelets. While they design, they’re applying their knowledge of ratios to compare the different types of beads used. It’s a fun and engaging way to connect classroom learning with real-world applications — and create a meaningful gift at the same time.

Ms. Conover’s project is a perfect example of how math can be both personal and practical. These sixth graders aren’t just learning — they’re making memories.
