Leader in Me Habit 5: See First To Understand, Then To Be Understood

This month we are focusing on Habit 5.

Students and teachers are learning how to

Listen FIRST and then SPEAK.

With this habit, students have learned:

  1. It is better to listen first and talk second.
  2. You have 2 ears and one mouth- Listen twice as much as you speak.
  3. Listen to people sincerely
  4. When others are talking, we are listening at one of these 4 levels:
    • Ignoring
    • Pretending
    • Selective listening
    • Attentive listening
  5. Be an empathetic listener

Putting the Habit into practice:

  • Introduce the habit with an object:
    • Telephone: play the telephone game.
    • Giant ears practice- pretend listening; see how frustrating it is for the other person and then do ‘real listening
  • Read some of these books from the library:
    • Are You My Mother? by'P.D. Eastman
    • Is Your Mama a Llama? by Deborah Guarino
    • Marrying Malcolm Murgatroyd by Mame Farrell
    • Veronica Knows Best by Nancy Robinson
    • The Bully of Baham Street by Leonard Shortall
