TMSA's Extended Care Program: Culinary Delights

TMSA students in the Extended Care Program love to eat! Throughout the month of November, the students are collaborating to grow, prepare, and cook food.

KaleStudents from the Garden Club harvested the kale they planted in September. They learned how to select the best leaves, wash them thoroughly, and then prepare them to add to a healthy wrap. Kale was a new ‘food experience’ for some students. However, most students tasted at least one bite and a few really enjoyed it and went back for seconds!

Healthy Kale Wrap

Ingredients:

3 cups Kale, fresh

2 tablespoons Hummus (your favorite flavor)

1 large Spinach Tortilla

1 teaspoon Cilantro, dried

Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Clean the kale leaves. Strip away the dark green leaf from the stems.
  2. Spread the hummus on the tortilla then add the cilantro, salt, and pepper. Add the kale on top.
  3. Roll up the wrap and enjoy!

PizzaNext, students are also learning how to make quick and simple personal-sized pizzas. Students can make this pizza at home, too.  TMSA 4th and 5th grade students volunteered to assist the Kindergarten and 1st grade students to prepare their pizzas. Of course, students liked making their pizzas but they also enjoyed eating their pizzas even more!
