Science 6: Ms. Bynoe

TMSA's 6th grade science scholars continue their  journey of discovering the usefulness of building models. They have built models of the water cycle, the earth's atmosphere and solar ovens. Parents and guardians, please ask your students to describe various weather phenomenon  so they can showcase what they've learned. Students may still turn in late assignments for credit.

Math 6 :  Mr. Price

TMSA's  6th grade math scholars recently started Unit 7. This new unit  introduces our students to Integers, Absolute Value, the Coordinate Plane, and how to determine the length/distance using the layout of a coordinate plane. The standards covered in this unit are MGSE6.NS.C.5,6 and 7. This domain involves using integers in real world situations like elevation, temperature, and bank account balance. Students will also graph ordered pairs on a coordinate plane, and learn direction and distance as it pertains to the real world.  Students are expected to enhance their math  skills by completing practice lessons in iReady. All PowerPoints, notes and assignments are posted in OTUS in the lessons tab.

Congratulations to Mr. Price's January 2021 Student of the Month - C. Woods!

ELA: Mr. Burnam

TMSA's 6th  grade ELA scholars spent most of the third quarter identifying text structure, recognizing point of view and author’s purpose, comparing texts across genres, and reviewing argumentative/opinion  and informational writing.  Highlights of our study in these areas were significant improvement in our Cycle 4 and 5 Assessments and study of the great poet, Langston Hughes.  Students analyzed several of Hughes’s poems including “Harlem”, “Dreams”, and “Mother to Son”.  As a culminating activity, students wrote a compare/contrast essay which compared Langston Hughes’s poem, “Mother to Son”, to Tupac Shakur’s poem, “The Rose That Grew From Concrete”.

Social Studies: Mr. Dolland

G’day mate! Last semester, TMSA's 6th grade scholars explored the Land Down Under- Australia. Scholars took a virtual tour of the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest living structure (that can be seen from outer space). Students learned about Uluru - the world’s largest monolith and a sacred site of Australia’s indigenous people-the Aborigines. Many students were enamored with the beauty of Australia’s geography, which includes beautiful beaches, picturesque mountains, and tropical rainforests. If you are an animal lover -  Australia is the place for you! Australia s the home of kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, Tasmanian devils, and a myriad of sea creatures. Lastly, students compared and contrasted Australia to their country, the United States of  America, in the areas of geography, government, and economy.

P.S. Don't forget these important housekeeping items:

  1. Students may submit a video to their homeroom teacher if they would like to try out for the morning announcements team
  2. Students should be completing 2 lessons of iReady daily;  a lesson does not count unless the score is passing
  3. Please have your student log into OTUS and iReady in front of you to show you their progress
  4. Students should be checking the homeroom class board on OTUS for enrichment opportunities, small group assignments and other important sixth grade announcements.
