Mrs. Harris is a professional educator and mental health provider who understands and responds to the challenges presented by today’s diverse student population. She works with students to improve behaviors, teaches and practices appropriate behaviors, and implements coping strategies when applicable. Counseling is a tool that helps students and families achieve academic and life success. She collaboratively engages all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to help students.
Counseling is multi-faceted in that it approaches people based on their individual needs and expands from there. School counseling includes guidance instruction, social skills development, relationship enhancement (peers, parents, and adults), goal setting, decision making, and other essential life skills. Mrs. Harris utilizes play therapy, which means she engages students in interactive activities which apply children’s natural communication and learning modality—play. Through play, children express themselves (both good and bad emotions), creative thinking and natural exploration are stimulated, and children practice and enhance survival skills. While middle school students prefer to talk rather than engage in play therapy, Mrs. Harris follows their lead to help them resolve the issues they are facing.
